Campaign Story
Island cares for those suffering a life threatening illness such as cancer or Aid, and their families whether in hospital or at home, and those who have been bereaved. The care of patients focuses on pain control and relief of any distressing symptoms. The psychosocial care addresses any of the emotional and spiritual issues that one may need to deal with when confronted with either a serious illness, possibly the end of one’s life, or bereavement.
In Zimbabwe 1 in 60 are in need of palliative care (WHO). Research published in the Journal of Pain & Symptom management (Vol. 3 # 2 Feb 17) estimates Children’s Palliative Care in Zimbabwe to be the worst in the world at 120 per 10, 000. The challenges associated with living with life threatening conditions such as cancer, HIV, MDR, TB, cancer and diabetes are made worse by a fragile and under-funded health system, lack of to follow up, lack of transportation to access care and the rise in diseases.
Island has been the principal provider of palliative care and bereavement services to adults and children in Zimbabwe since 1979. Its philosophy encompasses a skilled and sensitive way of caring for those suffering a life threatening illness and their families whether in hospital or at home, and those who have been bereaved. The organization has been selected to be evaluated to be a WHO Demonstration site for Africa.
Island believes that lives should be measured by its quality and not merely the length and strives to improve quality of life whatever the circumstances. Island’s vision is A Zimbabwe where people access quality palliative and bereavement care to reduce suffering and pain and improve the quality of their lives.
